sometimes cliques have sub-cliques. (the intersections can get a bit complicated.)

sometimes a member of a clique may still feel outside of it. (power dynamics can ruin things.)

occasionally clique dynamics are balanced and the connections between the members pull towards the center. (we can consider that non-toxic.)

often, though, the connections are pulled in various directions and the connection between two members are swayed (or pulled towards) other members. (we can consider that toxic.)
