The precise control of the drafting mayline, protractor, and technical pen contrasts with the spontaneous, willful hand drawn line.
These drawings feel simultaneously mechanical and free.
This project was inspired by Lebbeus Woods's "Conflict Space 3", but I found myself also referencing the work of Allan Jacobs, particularly his beautiful book "Great Streets", and Marion Mahony, a long-time drafter for Frank Lloyd Wright.
Relative size of marks, overlapping, and relative density all enhance the illusion of depth without actually modeling a 3-D space. I like how this small set of line styles can evoke so many different kinds of imagery and scales: viral particles, confetti, accelerating to light speed, contrails, cities at night, a camp fire, snow falling...
