Project #10038
"Memory can change the shape of a room, the colour of a car; and memories can be distorted. They're just an interpretation; they're not a record.”
Leonard Shelby, Memento
This project uses only straight lines to create abstract compositions that evoke memories/dreams of stage lights, live music shows, raves and dance clubs. Most outputs are bright, vibrant and chaotic, some are more even and intricately geometric, and a few will have quiet, subtle minimalist compositions.
The (mis)spelling of Liiiiights is a reference to the nested loops used to create the recurring lines. Also as I was developing this algorithm and trying to steer the outputs to be more “stage lighty” I began to prefer the ones that had glitches, odd geometry, repeating patterns, too many layers or other imperfections in them, and so I started embracing those elements and incorporating them. Some outputs also have a texture similar to that of a page from an old photocopier, which I’ve seen used as a metaphor for how memories work in our brains: that the process of recalling a memory is akin to taking a photo out from a file, making a photocopy of it and putting that copy back in your memory file, so that each time you access it, it loses a little bit of fidelity and eventually becomes a foggy distorted facsimile of the original memory.
I hope Liiiiights sparks positive memories for you, regardless of how fuzzy, or at least gives you good vibes and provides a place for your eyes to dance around.
