ASCII Graffiti is my second project using only ASCII, font glyphs and UNICODE. Inspiration for this project came from train graffiti. I live close to multiple train crossings. Rather than be annoyed about the delay in my commute as they passed, I instead decided to snap photos of train graffiti. Train crossings became a little welcome art break rather than a inconvenience 😊. Colors and styles vary widely across my sampled graffiti art, but there were also some common themes and palettes that presented themselves. I’ve photographed everything from random scribbles to works that cover entire boxcars. I find some connectedness in train graffiti. All of us, in all walks of life, sitting at a train crossing watching the same train, the same art, pass us by. Sometimes thousands of miles apart, we’re all really not so different.

For this project, each of the color schemes (15) were chosen based on IRL graffiti art. Some artists used bright and vivid colors, while others were more monochromatic. My goal here was to create art that is easy to print and display, so I focused on using a plain white background to allow collectors to print on whatever paper type they prefer. I prefer printing on textured paper for whatever reason.
