It also needs to be said that I had tons of help from the veterans.  Help that I am sincerely thankful for.  Setting down what they have taught me is an expression of that gratitude, paying it forward in the same spirit of generosity in which it was given.

I came into p5.js development with a background as a database developer, but with absolutely no experience in front end or web development.  I needed to be told how to begin as if a five year old.  Thinking that I can’t be the only creator in that position, I will endeavor to make no assumptions, to be clear, and to be complete.  Let’s dive in.

First of all, a sketch.js file is necessary, but insufficient.  You will also need an index.html file and a style.css file.  The index.html file, in particular, needs to include some specific lines of code customized for the fx(hash) platform - the default version supplied by your p5.js editor will not be sufficient.  I was given these files, and honestly I just use them.  Trying to understand them at the same time as trying to learn p5.js seemed a bridge too far.  The code for these two files is included below just as it was given to me and I suggest you take it, at least at the beginning, as two black boxes.  Likewise, I was given a p5.min.js file that I include in my deployment set.   It can be downloaded [here](https://p5js.org/download/).  This is the root directory of one of my projects showing the files zipped and uploaded to the platform.

What follows is the heavily annotated sketch.js file that I have developed as the starting point for my projects. You can copy the code, paste it into your p5.js editor, and run it.  It will produce a small circle in the middle of your canvas.  But the meat is not in the output.  It is in the annotations.  Read them.  Then give it a try.   Feel free to contact me if you run into any obstacles  or have questions.

I am just over a month into my adventures as a creator on fx(hash), coding generative art in p5.js.  This article is addressed to others who are new to this world.  The template encodes what I have learned through many hours of struggle.  I hope it eases your journey.   The first question you might ask is why I, just a few weeks into this learning process, feel qualified to offer a template for the platform.  Shouldn’t that sort of thing come from a seasoned veteran?  Perhaps.  I do not claim to be any sort of platform or language expert, but I have found my way to building successful work, and my efforts are recent enough for me to have some perspective on what fellow newcomers might be experiencing.
